Welcome back to another episode of GrantTalk, powered by GrantWatch! This week, host Libby Hikind, CEO and Founder of GrantWatch, joins Lisa Evangelos, National Administrator of the Culinary Federation. Together, they explore the transformative role of grant funding in Canada’s culinary arts.
The Culinary Federation: A Nationwide Network
The Culinary Federation, a professional association connecting chefs, cooks, and culinary partners across the nation, lies in the heart of Canada. From the bustling kitchens of Vancouver to the coastal culinary scenes of Newfoundland, this organization fosters professional development and innovation in the culinary arts.
Grant Funding Post-Pandemic
Lisa Evangelos shares her journey into grant writing and how grant funding has helped the organization. In 2022, the Culinary Federation hosted its first national culinary conference post-COVID in Saskatoon, Saskatchewan. The hospitality industry faced significant impacts from the pandemic, making this event a pivotal moment for recovery and reconnection.
Through GrantWatch, Lisa found a $25,000 special event grant offered by the City of Saskatoon. This funding allowed them to significantly reduce conference registration fees, enabling more chefs to attend, despite the financial strains of the pandemic. “It is really wonderful,” Lisa notes, emphasizing how the grant allowed members to reunite and strengthen their professional network.
Tips for Aspiring Grant Writers
Libby and Lisa finish their discussion with advice for aspiring grant writers. They both agree: plan ahead and take the time to produce quality applications. “Don’t rush to meet a deadline. If you have time, create a calendar and look to the future,” Lisa asserts. What’s more, Libby highlights GrantWatch’s grants calendar feature, which helps organizations organize deadlines and stay proactive.
