The CEO of GrantWatch Has Written a Children’s Book
The magic of a good book can shape a child’s world, sparking imagination and teaching lessons that last a lifetime. For Libby Hikind, founder and CEO of GrantWatch, the cause is professional and deeply personal. As a mother, grandmother, and great-grandmother, Libby is uniquely positioned to understand the profound impact of books that inspire imagination and teach life lessons. Her new journey as a children’s book author exemplifies her commitment to fostering emotional well-being and societal growth through storytelling.
And don’t worry; Libby has assured us that she is still at the helm as CEO of GrantWatch, with an increasing number of new grants for 2025!
A Vision for Timeless Stories
Libby Hikind isn’t new to creative endeavors. Known as the “Queen of Grants,” thanks to her book, The Queen of Grants, From Teacher to Grant Writer to CEO. Libby has already shown the world how she can weave together a narrative of success, empowerment, and grant writing. However, writing for children requires a writing talent that speaks to their boundless imaginations and curiosity and develops their critical thinking skills. You can see this in Mr. Squirrel’s Spring Cleaning Lesson.

Libby worked on the balanced literacy curriculum, where they took children’s literature and built entire curriculum lessons in every subject area – math, social studies, science, spelling, grammar, art, music, and everything in between. One small book would be woven into many subject areas.
Libby hopes her books are picked up by local school districts and are used in the classroom. She includes a back page with questions for all ages.
“I want books out there that speak to the child’s imagination with a life lesson for both the child and the adult who may be reading to the child,” said Libby. “My books need to be ageless.”
This dual-purpose storytelling is at the heart of her work. Her books aim not just to entertain but to resonate emotionally with readers of all ages, creating a shared experience between children and the adults who guide them.
Why Children’s Books Matter
Libby’s decision to focus on children’s books aligns with her lifelong passion for literacy and education. As a former teacher, she has seen firsthand how stories can shape young minds, build empathy, and inspire future leaders. But her mission goes beyond literacy; it’s about emotional well-being.
“I work for a better society, and that happens when we all feel emotionally well and content,” Libby explained. Her books are designed to foster understanding, resilience, and kindness, creating a foundation for children to grow into emotionally intelligent adults.
A Legacy of Impact
As CEO of GrantWatch, Libby has spent years empowering nonprofits, municipalities, and small businesses to secure funding for their initiatives. Now, she’s bringing that same drive to children’s literature, hoping to leave a lasting legacy of stories that inspire and educate. Her books aim to spark curiosity while offering valuable lessons—a combination that can enrich children’s lives and strengthen family bonds.
Introducing Mr. Squirrel’s Spring Cleaning Lesson
Libby’s first children’s book, Mr. Squirrel’s Spring Cleaning Lesson, is already making waves! Available on Amazon, Barnes & Noble, and independent bookstores, this charming and humorous story is about teamwork, responsibility, and the joy of a tidy home.
The story unfolds as Mrs. Squirrel declares it’s time for their annual spring cleaning in their cozy treehouse. While she is eager to dive into the task, Mr. Squirrel is less enthused and suggests, “Just throw it all out!” Taking his advice, after an exhausting day of trying to do it on her own, Mrs. Squirrel hires a dumpster and begins tossing out tools, knick-knacks, and even his beloved tire pump. When Mr. Squirrel returns to find their home spotless yet empty, he realizes the consequences of his hasty advice.
Filled with colorful illustrations, gentle humor, and meaningful life lessons, Mr. Squirrel’s Spring Cleaning Lesson teaches children the value of helping each other, respecting belongings, and working together to keep a cozy home. Perfect for families and children ages 2 to 8, this book highlights the rewards of teamwork and clear communication.
