Make the Most of Summer: Health, Safety Tips, and Grant Funding

It’s summer, and the warmer weather brings opportunities for outdoor fun and exercise. The bright, sunny days and warm evenings lure us outdoors with the promise of casual get-togethers with family and friends, hikes, and swimming. Adventure and physical activity, that’s how we make the most of summer.

GrantWatch understands the importance of staying active and healthy during the summer months. That’s why we provide Sports and Recreation grants specifically designed to support a wide range of summer activities. From sports programs at local community centers to family-friendly outdoor adventures, these grants make it easier for everyone to participate in enriching and enjoyable activities.

Embrace the Outdoors

  • Evening walks: Take a stroll around the neighborhood. Better yet, bring the dog!
  • Sports Programs: Sign the kids and yourself up for yoga, Pilates, or any number of exercise classes at your local community or recreation center.
  • Take a Dip in the Pool: Go swimming together! It’s easily the most enjoyable recreation in summer.
  • Ride Your Bike: There is nothing like the freedom felt while coasting along on a bicycle. It’s fun, it’s easy; bring a hat.
  • Picnic in the Park: Plan a Family Fun Day at the Park and games and laughter will follow.
  • Take a Hike: Whether you want to hike alone or with a partner, this sport is not for the faint of heart.  Take extra care; bring water and a compass.
  • Join a Team:  Softball, football, tennis, or soccer, oh yeah! Team sports offer a chance to find new friends and bond over some friendly competition.

Stay Safe in the Heat

Heat is the biggest danger in the summer months. Being hot for too long can cause many illnesses, some of which can be deadly. Older people are particularly at high risk for hyperthermia because the body’s ability to respond to summer heat becomes less efficient with age. Look out for warning signs of hyperthermia, which include headache, nausea, dizziness, muscle spasms, and fatigue. If you suspect someone is suffering from heat exhaustion, get them out of the sun and into a cool place. Offer fluids, preferably water. Encourage them to lie down and rest in the coolest place possible. Suggest a shower, bath, or sponge off with cool water.

Note: To avoid hyperthermia, don’t exercise or do strenuous activities in the midday heat. Drink plenty of liquids to stay hydrated.
