Breast Cancer Awareness Month
October is Breast Cancer Awareness Month. It’s been nearly 40 years since the country first recognized the need to dedicate an entire month to spreading awareness of this disease. According to Breastcancer.org, breast cancer impacts one in eight women in the United States and 2.3 million women worldwide. It doesn’t matter who you are or where you come from, the disease does not discriminate. It’s important to know the warning signs and assess your risk.
It stands to reason then, that the best medicine is prevention. The goal this month is to encourage screenings to prevent breast cancer. To that end, most doctors recommend self-examinations about once a month. In addition, the American Cancer Society states women over 40 should consider having a mammogram once a year.
Financial Hardship Brought On by Breast Cancer
GrantWatch believes that creating a financial support system is also very important. Keeping up with growing medical bills, utilities, house payments, transportation costs, and other bills, while fighting this disease, needs to remain manageable. Financial hardship for individuals and their families struggling with breast cancer is a serious issue. Unfortunately, breast cancer treatments are extremely expensive. Most can’t afford the out-of-pocket costs that come along with the diagnosis. In turn, this causes stress for sufferers as well as loved ones. GrantWatch may have a possible solution.
