Affordable Housing Grants Available on GrantWatch

Affordable housing grants are currently available on the GrantWatch database. If you’ve been looking to rent or purchase a home this year, you may have faced some sticker shock. In addition to the skyrocketing price of…well…everything, rental and housing costs have gone through the roof in some areas of the country. As a result, affordable housing is a serious issue facing many Americans.

You can do without when it comes to some things, but can you do without a home? Of course not. People with higher incomes have multiple choices; they can either stay put, move, or downsize. However, most middle and low-income families have little or no choice. GrantWatch’s headquarters are located in Florida, which has experienced some of the highest rental increases in the nation. In 2022, Miami saw a 23.7% increase, compared to the previous year. Recent news sources indicate that in 2024, rent costs are beginning to dip, with Florida experiencing the largest percentage drop. While it’s a step in the right direction, Florida’s rates still remain higher than the national average. Something needs to be done. The team at GrantWatch wants to help our extended community of subscribers and folks everywhere find the funding they need for affordable housing.

Housing Affordability

Lower rates in some areas are a good thing. However, it can still be a struggle if you are in one of the lower income brackets. According to The Council of State Governments, on average in the U.S., a person would need to earn over $25 an hour to afford a two-bedroom rental. But currently, the federal minimum wage is only $7.25 an hour. Even though many states have a higher minimum wage, housing costs are still an issue for many middle-class and lower-income workers.

Since there is so little availability of affordable housing, it has left many “cost-burdened” (30% or more of their income spent on housing). As a result, they don’t have enough left over for other necessities like food, car payments, or utilities. Younger generations are living at home longer. Others are moving in with roommates or living in crowded conditions with extended family. Many live without a safety net in transitional housing, shelters, vehicles, or on the street.

Affordable Housing Solutions

Luckily, this perfect storm is beginning to show some blue sky in the distance, according to NerdWallet. The spike in rental and property prices that started in 2021 is slowly but steadily declining. We aren’t out of the woods yet since rent prices are still 30% higher now than they were in 2019. The really good news though, is that there are organizations out there offering help. GrantWatch has a list of grants available that can help ease the burden of rising housing prices. We have categories that offer grants specifically for housing to help our country’s underserved communities.
